Trump Cuba Negotiations Could Lead to New U.S. Engagement
President Donald Trump suggested the United States may reengage with Cuba. He said the communist-run island nation appears ready to negotiate with Washington.
Trump made the remarks while answering questions from reporters. A reporter asked what the United States would gain from such a deal.
The president responded that Cuba wants to make an agreement. He also strongly defended Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s role in negotiations.
Trump praised Rubio’s performance in office. He said Rubio could become one of the greatest secretaries of state in history.
Meanwhile, Trump highlighted Rubio’s Cuban heritage. He said Rubio’s ability to speak Spanish is helpful in negotiations.
Trump Cuba Negotiations Led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio
Trump said Rubio is handling the discussions with Cuban leaders. He described Rubio as highly successful in previous roles.
“He also speaks the language, which is always nice and always helpful,” Trump said. Additionally, Trump noted Rubio is already dealing directly with the situation.
Trump suggested the outcome could take different forms. He said the process might involve what he called a “friendly takeover.”
However, he said the result could also come without such a scenario. According to Trump, Cuba’s current economic situation gives the United States leverage.
Trump claimed the country is facing severe difficulties. He said Cuba currently lacks energy and financial resources.
Recent reports also indicate that Cuba’s economy has been under heavy strain. The island has faced an ongoing energy and economic crisis in recent months.
Trump Cuba Negotiations Linked to Economic Crisis
Trump argued that Cuba relied heavily on support from Venezuela in the past. According to the president, that assistance included energy and financial resources.
However, he said that support has now disappeared. Without Venezuela’s backing, Trump believes the Cuban government faces growing economic pressure.
“They have no energy, they have no money,” Trump said. He also described the situation as a serious humanitarian concern.
Trump added that the United States does not want to see humanitarian suffering in Cuba. Nevertheless, he criticized the island’s communist leadership.
The president said the Castro regime had been brutal toward many people. He also pointed to the experiences of Cuban Americans living in the United States.
Trump said Cuban Americans remain an important political community. He noted that many Cuban American business leaders have achieved significant success.
Trump Says Cuba Is “In Its Last Moments of Life”
Trump repeated his views during remarks to Latin American leaders. The event took place at his golf club in Doral, Florida.
The White House described the gathering as the Shield of the Americas summit. Trump turned to the topic of Cuba while discussing Venezuela.
He told attendees that the communist-run island nation is “very much at the end of the line.” He also described Cuba as being in its “last moments of life.”
However, Trump expressed optimism about the country’s future. He said Cuba could experience a “great new life” if changes occur.
Trump also claimed Cuba is already negotiating with Rubio. He added that he believes a deal between the United States and Cuba could come together quickly.
Recent reports have similarly indicated that Cuba may be seeking negotiations with the United States amid its worsening economic crisis.
